    The Road to 2012

This year, peace groups will have to build linkages around domestic economic and environmental issues with the AFL-CIO, the Sierra Club and insurgent movements including Wisconsin and Occupy Wall Street. For the peace movement, the purpose is to build a stronger coalition than between longtime pacifist and religious communities. And domestic movements will have to be convinced that their goals are unattainable without ending the trillion dollar wars abroad. Democrats will have to decide that winning elections requires a platform commitment to rapidly end these wars. And the peace movement will have to build a mandate for peace into the 2012 election.

    The North Carolina Populist Test

North Carolina is not only the site of the Democratic Party’s 2012 convention, but a crucial swing state in the November election. As this report indicates, a powerful populist movement led by African-Americans seems to be taking root in the state.

Wisconsin Social Movement Still Succeeding in Political Recall

In this report for Dissent, Paul and Mary Jo Buhle capture the essence of a genuine social movement in Wisconsin, which, so far, is surging from a well of popular discontent far wider than the bounds of the organized progressive and labor movements. It is this striking combination of a determined popular uprising, combined with the institutional resources of the Wisconsin Democratic Party and labor unions, which might turn Wisconsin around and stop the Tea Party in their tracks. Though receiving far less coverage than the Occupy movement, Wisconsin’s occupation of its “people’s capitol” and subsequent occupation of the state’s precincts is what makes the events historic, unique, and deserving of support from all across America.

    Questions for the Florida Primary

Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich should be asked whether they favor war with Iran. The question is an urgent one. War is being urged on the Republican candidates by John Yoo, author of the Bush Administration’s “torture memos”, in a frank opinion piece: “Because of the Obama administration's reluctance to confront this looming threat, others—such as the Republican presidential candidates—must begin preparing the case for a military strike to destroy Iran's nuclear program.”

Slow Burn on the Wisconsin Front

Paul Buhle writes from Madison, WI, in Dissent Magazine, “the interesting thing is that the discussion level of ‘what the Recall means’ remains very low, by contrast to all those places where 95% of lefties do zero but burn up the internet with pointless discussions.” He adds that “the next confrontation here will likely be December 19, with Solidarity Sing-a-longers hauled away by Capitol police (those once-friendly fellows) for the crime of song! Or maybe the governor won't want the embarrassment. We'll see... first hand.”

Environmentalists May Cause Delay of Pipeline Decision

Updated on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 9:53AM by Registered CommenterTom Hayden

After major environmental demonstrations outside the White House, and revelations of internal conflicts of interest in the review process, it appears that the Obama administration may delay or revise its plans for the Keystone XL pipeline moving Canadian tar sands oil through pipelines to Texas.

Mississippi Voters Deny “Personhood” to Fertilized Egg, Could Corporations Be Next?

With a last-minute grass roots surge, Mississippi voters rejected an initiative by anti-abortion extremists to confer "personhood" on fertilized eggs. The measure had support from both political parties in the final campaign stretch, but was defeated 58-42%. The measure was a direct challenge to the Roe v. Wade ruling of 1973.

Ohio Votes Against Tea Party Republican Policies, Wisconsin Recall Next

Ohio voters rebelled at the polls 62-38% Tuesday against Republican governor John Kasich’s attack on collective bargaining rights, sending a strong message from the heartland that the Tea Party agenda may be unraveling. Next week, Wisconsin activists will launch their drive to obtain 540,000 signatures to recall Gov. Scott Walker sometime next year.
